Clearing Out Garage Clutter

While a garage can be the perfect place to store things you’d rather not keep in the house, its versatility can also lend itself to chaos.

By learning to make the most of the space you have, you can clear out garage clutter and store only the things you need.

In order to return your garage back to a clutter-free zone, follow these simple steps to eliminate the chaos.

Sorting and Throwing Away

Before you even begin to tackle the mess, gather the necessary items you’ll need to quickly work through the clutter.

Boxes for Storing ItemsA few durable, cardboard boxes are necessary for sorting smaller items, while heavy duty trash bags are a must for tossing the junk you no longer need or want.
Once you begin, don’t let distractions get in your way. Begin by sorting everything in the garage into manageable piles. Everything you have should go into separate piles based on similarity; for example, outdoor supplies with each other, gardening tools together, etc. As soon as you’ve sorted everything into piles, go through each item and figure out whether it’s really a necessity or if you can do without it.

Be diligent! Toss broken items, things that are missing pieces, items that no longer hold value to you, and rusty equipment that’s no longer useful. The more things you can throw away, the better.

Throw away everything that’s no longer useful into trash bags, and recycle anything that can be.

You may even consider having a garage sale to get rid of knick knacks and other items you don’t want anymore.

Giving it Away

Once you’ve sorted everything into piles and thrown away the trash, you might be surprised at what you actually have!

Old clothing, books or other items you no longer need can be donated to a charity or given to friends and relatives.

Keep everything you truly need, but give away the rest and let someone else benefit! You are not only helping someone in need, but eliminating the clutter in your garage at the same time.

Storing Everything

Now that you know what you’re keeping, it’s important to determine a place to store it all. Avoid storing anything on the floor – your goal is to reduce the clutter, not put it back!

If you don’t have a lot of available storage space, hang a few shelves, add some cabinets or purchase cubbies to store along the wall for smaller items.
Keep placement in mind when you are putting everything away. For example, items that you use frequently should be placed in an easy to reach location, while items you tend to use infrequently can be placed farther back.

If you use bins or cubbies, place an adhesive label or use a permanent marker to label what’s in each container. This makes locating what you need a breeze!

Keeping the Garage Clutter-Free

Once you’ve sorted, tossed and stored everything you’re keeping, it’s important to ensure the garage stays clean and clutter free.

When you use an item, place it back in its original location so it can easily be found next time. Don’t follow the old habits that created the clutter in the first place!

With just these few simple steps, you can have a clean, organized and clutter free garage. Ask others to help you if clearing out the garage clutter seems too large a task for one person to do.

Believe it or not, creating a clutter-free zone is easier than you may realize. All you have to do is get started!
